Men's soccer off to best start since 1985 with 4-1 win over WPI

Worcester, MA (courtesy WPI sports information--- Lee Russo (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.) netted a pair of goals and Stephen Kostel (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) added three assists to lift undefeated Brandeis to a 4-1 victory over host WPI in a non-conference men's soccer matchup on Tuesday evening.

The Judges are now 5-0 on the season, their best start since 1985 and longest winning streak since 2000.  The Engineers see their record level at 3-3.

Russo gave the Judges the lead just 1:25 into the contest when he ripped a shot from 10 yards out after a nifty pass by Matt Brondoli (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts).
Russo extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 69th minute with his third goal of the season with an assist by Kostel.  The visitors put the game out of reach nine minutes later when Kyle Feather (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) was on the receiving end of a cross and then redirection by Luke Teece (Tuscon, Ariz./University) and Kostel.
WPI broke up the shutout in the 80th minute when freshman Sean Calvert (Santa Clara, Calif.) headed a cross by Sean Galligan (Weymouth, Mass.) into the back of the net for his first career goal.  It was the first goal allowed by the Judges in 440 minutes this season. Brandeis then put the finishing touches on the 4-1 win in the 86th minute when Kostel set up Teece on his fourth tally of the year.

Taylor Bracken (North Andover, Mass./No. Andover) made a pair of saves in between the pipes for the Judges, who outshot the hosts 14-7 and took six of the game's nine corner kicks.  Paul Moan (Watertown, Mass.) was credited with four saves for the hosts.

WPI returns to the field Saturday when they host Clark at 2:30pm to begin its 2010 NEWMAC schedule.  Brandeis hosts Newbury on Thursday at 6:30pm.
