WALTHAM, Mass.- In a tightly contested University Athletic Association match between the Brandeis Judges and University of Washington Bears, the 8th ranked Bears fought their way to a 2-0 win at Gordon Field. Senior forward Michael Chamberlain (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade Acad.) scored in the 39th minute to give Washington University the 1-0 lead and send them on their way to their 12th overall victory and 4th in the UAA. The Bears improved to 12-1 (4-0 UAA) while the Judges fell to 8-4-1 (1-2-1 UAA) marking their first loss of the year at Gordon Field.

After a fast paced start to the first half, both sides settled down with the Judges gaining most of the scoring chances. However, it was Washington University who opened the scoring in the 39th minute when senior midfielder Cody Costakis (Edgewood, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) swung a corner in to the far post for classmate Zach Hendrickson (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade Acad.). Hendrickson headed it to the feet of Chamberlain who finished with a hard one timer into the back of the net. The Bears would carry that 1-0 advantage to the half.

In the second half, despite some chippy, physical play, Brandeis continued to gain the upper hand in scoring chances, outshooting the Bears 11-2. The Judges struggled to find the back of the net although strong performances by Sam Ocel (No. Attleboro, Mass./ No. Attleboro), Lee Russo (Westford, Mass./ Westford Acad.), and Kyle Feather (Pinebrook, N.J./ Montville Township) helped keep them in the game. Ocel and Lee combined for eight shots, six on goal, while Feather helped control the middle of the field and facilitate many scoring opportunities. Bear sophomore Jonathon Jebson (Dexter, Mich.) kept his side on top with a career-high nine saves, including a pair of acrobatic stops on Ocel headers.

Washington University put the game out of reach in the 84th minute when senior forward Dylan Roman (Bethesda, Md./ Sidwell Friends School) beat his defender to create a 2 on 1 with Brandeis's junior goalie Blake Minchoff (Fiskdale, Mass./ Tantasqua Reg.). Roman fed  to junior midfielder Zach Query (Zurich, Switzerland/ Zurich International) who finished with a well placed shot past the diving Minchoff who finished the match with two saves after allowing more than one goal in a game for only the third time all season.

Brandeis returns to action at Springfield College at 4:00 pm on October 19th. Washington University goes home to play Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:00 pm the same day.
