PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Brandeis men's soccer team picked up its first University Athletic Association road victory of the season today as the Judges downed Carnegie Mellon, 2-1, in double overtime. With the win, the Judges improve to 11-5-1, 2-3-1 in the UAA, while the Tartans fall to 6-8-1, 2-4 UAA.

Carnegie Mellon opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Kyle Young found Alex Abedian open on the right side of the box. Abedian struck with a right-footed shot and placed it inside the near post past Brandeis junior Blake Minchoff (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) for his third goal of the season. Minchoff kept his team in the  contest by stopping the next three shots on goal in the first half as the Judges overcame an 11-4 deficit in shots in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Brandeis was much improved in the second half in overtime, outshooting the hosts, 9-7, the rest of the way, and it paid off with a victory. After Minchoff stymied the Tartans in the 70th and 71st minutes, the Judges' equalizer came in the 75th. After CMU netminder Christopher Madden stopped an initial shot from Brandeis rookie midfielder Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional), senior midfielder Theo Terris (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) was on the spot with the rebound for his fifth goal of the season. With the goal, Terris becomes the fourth different Brandeis player with at least five this season, while Savonen's assist gives him five onthe campaign and a team-leading 17 points overall.

The Judges kept the pressure up in the final 15 minutes of regulation, getting three corner kicks and three more shots, but Madden stopped Savonen in the 87th minute to help preserve the tie. Brandeis had two corners and the only shot in the first overtime, but the game-winner came in the 107th minute. After the Judges earned a free kick from about 25 yards out, junior forward Lee Russo (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.) stepped over the ball. He sent it far post and a Carnegie Mellon defender got a head on the ball. Unfortunately for the Tartans, he deflected it in the wrong direction and caught Madden off-guard, giving the Judges the win on an own goal.

Minchoff finished with six saves after the CMU goal. The win for Brandeis avenges an overtime loss in Waltham last season, 1-0. Madden finished with four stops for the Tartans, who suffered their first overtime loss this season after going 2-0-1 in their first three OT contests.

Both squads wrap up their regular season next Saturday afternoon, with the Judges hosting NYU at 12 noon and Carnegie Mellon taking on Emory at 11 a.m.
