Worcester, Mass. – (taken from a Clark press release) Visiting Brandeis University, ranked No. 8 in the latest D3Soccer.com national rankings, used a powerful offensive attack to post an impressive 5-0 win over Clark University in non-league men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Judges improve to 6-0 and extend their team shutout streak to 354 minutes – a span of nearly four consecutive games. Clark, meanwhile, falls to 2-2-1 and has now been shutout for the sixth time in the last 23 games.
Brandeis got the ball rolling in the 14th minute when Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) took a Tudor Livadaru (Bronx, N.Y.) throw in and fired a shot that found the upper right corner of the goal for an early 1-0 lead.
The next goal came in interesting fashion when Savonen got past Clark netminder Robert Bischof (Tarrytown, N.Y.) but his shot was saved by a Cougar field player, however, the subsequent rebound was drilled home by Livadru at 15:51.
Clark's best first half scoring chance came in the final minute when TJ Zirkman (Freehold, N.J.) took a feed from just outside the box but his attempt sailed high over the crossbar.
Less than seven minutes into the second half, Brandeis added another score on an own goal by the Cougars, upping the lead to 3-0.
In the 62nd minute, Clark's best scoring opportunity of the day came off the foot of Josh Demers (Warwick, R.I.). He got free in the box and fired a blast that Kenn Fryer (Wilmington, Mass.) turned back with a diving stop.
The Judges tacked on two more goals less than two minutes apart to put the game out of reach. The first one came when Josh Berg(Weymouth, Mass.) found the back of the net for his first career goal at 74:21 and the final one came courtesy of Kyle Feather (Pinebrook, N.J.) who scored when Michael Soboff (Framingham, Mass.) saw his shot bang off the crossbar and Feather was there to send it home.
In the end, the stats were pretty close, with Brandeis holding a 19-12 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Fryer finished with three saves for the shutout in what was his first career start. Bischof stopped five in suffering his first defeat of the year.
Brandeis will return to action on Wednesday when they host Lasell at 4:00 p.m. Clark is back on the field on Tuesday when they host Gordon on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
