WALTHAM, Mass. — Brandeis University junior forward Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional) scored his first collegiate hat trick today as the Judges' men's soccer team defeated visiting Mass. Maritime Academy, 6-3, on Gordon Field tonight. With the win, the Judges, ranked 12th in the nation in Division III by the NSCAA and 13th by D3soccer.com, improve to 11-2 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall back to .500 at 5-5-2.

Savonen, who had two previous multi-goal games, scored all of Brandeis's even-number goals, scoring in the 11th, 58th and 65th minutes. His second goal of the night opened the second-half scoring and proved to be the game-winner. With the three goals and six points tonight, Savonen now has 21 goals and 12 assists for 54 points in his career. He became the 23rd player in school history with 20 or more goals and the 24th player to reach the half-century mark in points. He now ranks 22nd on the overall points list.

Senior Kyle Feather (Pinebrook, N.J./Montville Township) was also involved in three Brandeis goals tonight, scoring the first goal of the game in the seventh minute, and assisting Savonen's first two goals. Feather's third four-point game of the season moved him into 17th place on Brandeis's career scoring list with 64 points on 25 goals and 14 helpers.

Brandeis's other goals were scored by sophomore Michael Chaput (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) in the 32nd minute and rookie Evan Jastremski (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) in the 59th minute. Assists went to first-year midfielder Josh Berg (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and senior Sam Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) respectively.

Mass. Maritime spoiled Brandeis's shutout bid in the 18th minute when rookie Thomas McCarthy (Tybee Island, Ga./Benedictine Military) put home a rebound of sophomore Connor McInnis's (Duxbury, Mass./Tabor Acad.) initial shot. McInnis added a second goal in the 81st minute on a penalty kick, and the Buccaneers notched a third goal in the 89th minute on a blast from 30 yards off the foot of rookie Robert McClusky (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) that deflected high off the left post and in.

Rookie Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) made 14 saves for the visitors in the losing effort. Brandeis sophomore Kenn Fryer (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) had two saves in the win despite allowing the first goals of his career.
