WALTHAM, Mass. — The Brandeis University men's soccer team earned a much-needed University Athletic Association victory today as the Judges defeated the visiting University of Chicago Maroons, 3-0, on Gordon Field. Brandeis improves to 13-4-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the UAA, while UC falls to 9-5-2, 3-3 UAA.

      The Judges got all the scoring they would need in the 22^nd minute. Senior forward Sam Ocel (No. Attleboro, Mass./No. Attleboro) was taken down just outside the left corner of the 18-yard box. Classmate forward Tudor Livadaru (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Acad.) took the free kick, and his left-footed laser ricocheted off the right post and in. The tally was Livadaru's career-high fourth goal of the season and his second game-winner.

      Chicago had a chance to equalize in the 32^nd minute on a straight-on shot from the top of the 18-yard box by junior midfielder Sawyer Kiskin (Fairbanks, Alaska/Worcester Acad.), but Brandeis junior Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H./Concord) made the stop. On their next attack, Brandeis added their first insurance goal. Junior forward Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional) took advantage of deflection in the Maroon back field. He beat a defender to the ball and drove to the goal line. Savonen's initial shot was stopped by UC sophomore keeper Brett Wiesen (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier), but the rebound came right back to the Judge forward, who deposited his eighth goal of the season.

Savonen added his second score of the game early in the second half. Following a Brandeis corner, the ball came to the feet of sophomore midfielder Jake Picard (Suffield, Conn./Suffield). Picard touched the ball to Savonen, who one-timed it past Wiesen for his ninth goal of the season, a new career-high. It was his third multi-goal game of the season and fourth of his career. With 58 career points and 22 goals, he moves into 20^th on the Judges' scoring list in both categories.

      Chicago was able to apply pressure in the second half, outshooting the Judges, 7-5 in the final 45 minutes and 11-9 for the contest. Brandeis's Graffy made two of his three saves in the second half and ended up recording his fourth shutout of the campaign. Wiesen had two saves in the losing effort for UC.

      Brandeis will close out the regular season next Saturday at 12 noon against UAA rival New York University. Chicago will host Washington University next Saturday as well.
