Three from soccer earn UAA Player of the Week honors

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's and women's soccer teams earned threeUniversity Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Week accolades today. For the men's team, senior Michael Soboff of Framingham, Mass., was named UAA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, while classmate Robbie Lynch of Weymouth, Mass., claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors. For the women, senior Sapir Edalati of Great Neck, N.Y.,was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

Soboff and Lynch guided the Brandeis men to a 2-0 week and have them off to a perfect 7-0 start, making them one of seven unbeaten and untied teams in Division III. The Judges, ranked first in New England and fifth in all of Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) have won their first seven games for the third season in a row. The regional and national rankings are Coach Michael Coven's program's highest since 1996.

Last week, against two other squads that were unbeaten at the time, Soboff was the key offensive cog. He scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 road win at 5-0 Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Sept. 17, tallying in the 24th minute.  On Sept. 20 at home against 5-0 Tufts University, Soboff assisted the winning goal in the 79th minute of a 2-0 victory. Soboff leads the UAA in game-winning goals, and is tied for second with five goals and third with 12 points.

Lynch helped the Judges maintain their unbeaten record on both sides of the field. He anchored a defense that turned in their third- and fourth-straight shutouts. The Judges have allowed a league-low two goals allowed in seven contests, with a 0.29 goals-against average that is the ninth-lowest in Division III. Lynch got into the act on offense with the game-winning goal against Tufts in the 79th minute, the first score of his collegiate career. Playing in the box following a corner kick, he converted Soboff's feed across the goal mouth for the clinching score.

The men are back in action on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at 6-2 Babson. Their next home match is Tuesday, Sept. 30, against 7-0-1 Wheaton College, currently ranked 21st in Division III by the NSCAA, at 7 p.m.

Edalati helped the Brandeis women extend their winning streak to six in a row after losing their season opener. It marks their longest winning streak since 2010 and includes head coach Denise Dallamora's 300th career victory. The Judges defeated a pair of fellow one-loss teams last week, and Edalati scored three of the team's five goals, including both game-winners. She scored in the 42nd and 88th minutes in a 4-0 rout of 5-1 Gordon College on Sept. 17, then notched the game-winning goal in the 79th minute in a 1-0 win over Lesley College on Sept. 20. Overall this season, Edalati has been involved in nine of the Judges' 17 goals, with five goals and four assists for 14 points. She is tied for second in the UAA in goals, and third in assists and total points. The 6-1 Judges were ranked sixth in New England in the most recent NSCAA regional rankings.

The Brandeis women have a pair of tough contests this week, heading to 6-1-1 Wellesley on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and hosting 5-0 Bowdoin, the second-ranked team in the region and 19th-ranked team in Division III, Saturday at 1 p.m.
