Ocel earns UAA Athlete of the Week honors for the third time

WALTHAM, Massachusetts — Four Brandeis University student-athletes have earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors for the first week of competition ending Sept. 5.

  • Senior midfielder Josh Ocel of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, was named UAA Men's Soccer Offensive Co-Player of the Week, his third career UAA weekly honor. Ocel had a hand in all three Brandeis goals in the ninth-ranked Judges' 3-1 win over John Carroll University on Sept. 3. He scored goals in the 9th minute on a free kick and on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. In between, he notched an assist on the game-winning goal when his corner was headed home in the 51st minute by junior Patrick Flahive of Chatham, Ill. The assist was the 20th of Ocel's career, making him the 14thplayer in school history to reach the plateau. His five points were a career-high. Ocel also helped anchor the Brandeis midfield in a 1-0 win over #6 Haverford College between top-10 teams on Sept. 4. Ocel is a 2013 graduate of Worcester Academy, while Flahive is a 2014 WA grad.
  • Senior goalkeeper Alexis Grossman ofSyosset, New York, was named UAA Women's Soccer Co-Player of the Week. Grossman earned the honor for the third time in her career after backstopping the 13th-ranked Judges to a 2-0 start. She made a career-high eight saves in a 1-0 win over MIT on Sept. 1, and two more in a 2-0 win over Lasell on Sept. 4. With her two shutouts, Grossman now has 13 for her career, moving her into fourth on the Judges' all-time list. Grossman is a 2013 graduate of Syosset High School.
  • Senior forward Lea McDaniel of Phoenix, Arizona, earned UAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors. McDaniel scored both game-winning goals for the #13 Judges last week. She tallied in the 25th minute of the Sept. 1 win over MIT and in the 26th minute in the Sept. 4 win. The goals were the 11th and 12th of McDaniel's career, six of which have been game-winners. McDaniel is a 2013 graduate of Chaparral High School.
  • Sophomore Emily Bryson of Quincy, Massachusetts, was recognized for the women's cross country team. The 2015 UAA champion as a rookie, Bryson led the Judges to victory at the Emmanuel Fens Classic. Bryson won the race by covering the two-mile course in 11:09, eclipsing the previous course record by 37 seconds. She led the Judges to a meet victory with a perfect score by producing the top five finishers. Bryson is a 2015 graduate of North Quincy High School.
