CLEVELAND, Ohio (some info taken from a CWRU press release)– The Brandeis University men's soccer team got a goal in the fourth minute from senior Patrick Flahive (Chatham, Ill./Worcester Acad.) and the Judges made it stand up as they defeated Case Western Reserve University on the road in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams. The Judges, ranked No. 13 in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches and 23rd by D3soccer.com, improve to 7-2, 1-0 in the UAA. The Spartans fall to 4-5-1, 0-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game's only offense came in the fourth minute of play. Flahive took a short pass from sophomore Max Breiter (Lincoln, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) in front of the six-yard box that set him up one-on-one with the CWRU keeper. Flahive converted just 3:53 into the game.
- The goal was Flahive's fourth of the season, tying him for the team lead. It was his second game-winner of the season and the seventh of his career.
- The Spartans' best opportunity of the half came on a long shot from sophomore Brian Woo, with 13:52 to play in the period, but the attempt was tipped over the bar by Brandeis' senior keeper Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn./Suffield).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis held a slim 15-13 advantage in shots, but the edge was 9-2 in shots on goal.
- CWRU took an 11-9 advantage in corner kicks.
- Woodhouse's first-half save was the only one he was called on to make in 45 minutes.
- Sophomore Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was not required to make a save in the second half, though the Judges cleared a header attempt off the line on a Spartan header in the 83rd minute.
- Case's Calvin Boyle made eight saves in the losing effort.
