Brandeis soccer teams earn United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards

WALTHAM, Mass. — The Brandeis University men's and women's teams have both been awarded the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards for the 2016-17 academic year.

To qualify for the team award, the team must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 for the 2016-17 academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA then dividing by the number of players. A total of 842 teams – 296 men and 546 women – were honored. Brandeis was one of 210 institutions who had both men's and women's teams recognized.

This is the eighth-straight season being honored as a United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award winner for the Brandeis women and the fifth-straight for the Judges men.

In 2016-17, the Judges had 11 women and 11 men named to the Academic All-University Athletic Association squad for earning a 3.3 GPA during their playing season. The Judges became the ninth program in NCAA Division III history to send both the men's and women's teams to the Final Four in the same season in 2016. The Brandeis men reached the national semifinals for the fourth time in program history in their final season under 44-year head coach Mike Coven, while the women were guided by the United Soccer Coaches Coaching Staff of the Year, led by Denise Dallamora, who is now in her 38th year as Brandeis's only head coach.

This season, both teams have spent time ranked in the top 25 in the national rankings, with the 9-1-2 women currently ranked fourth in New England and 22nd nationally. The men are currently 9-2 on the season and rated third in New England and 15th nationally.

The Judges will take on the University of Rochester this evening in University Athletic Association play, with the men facing the Yellowjackets at 5:00 p.m. and the women at 7:30 p.m.
