WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University men's soccer team saw sophomore Alex Walter (Londonderry N.H./Lawrence Academy) score a golden goal with just over two minutes left to play tonight as the Judges defeated visiting Washington University, 2-1, in a University Athletic Association contest tonight. With the win, the Judges, ranked No. 19 nationally in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches and No. 21 by D3soccer.com, improve to 12-3 overall and remain in a 3-way tie atop the UAA at 4-1. The Bears fall to 7-6-1, 1-4 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Washington University got on the board first in the 12th minute when the Bears' Ryan Sproule headed home a cross from Sean Connors.
- The Judges found an equalizer in the 26th minute when sophomore Dylan Hennessy (New York, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) sent a through ball for classmate Max Breiter (Lincoln, Mass./Lawrence Academy), who knocked it home for his third goal of the season.
- The teams were evenly matched through regulation, with shots tied at 10-10 and corner kicks 4-3 in favor of the Bears. Brandeis was whistled for nine fouls compared to six for the visitors.
- Brandeis controlled the first OT period with two shots, as the Bears' Colin McClune made the only save of the extra session.
- The Judges earned back-to-back corner kicks in the second OT period, finally finding the back of the net after WashU failed to clear the second.
- Senior Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy) found the ball to the left of the box and sent in a cross towards the net. Walter was on the spot to convert with 1:59 left on the clock.
- The goal was Walter's second goal of the season, both of which have been UAA game-winners.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis finished with a 15-10 edge in shots and 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
- Sophomore Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) made three saves to improve to 3-0 this season.
- McCune made two stops in the losing effort.
- Ocel's assist was the 42nd of his career, putting him within two of Brandeis's career record. He is NCAA Division IIIs career active leader in assists.
- Brandeis improves to 7-0 on the season at home and 4-0 in overtime.
- The Judges had not won against WashU in Waltham since 1997.
