WALTHAM, Mass. – The #8 Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team narrowly advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer tournament, outlasting the Bowdoin Polar Bears 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a scoreless regulation and two fruitless overtime periods. The Scarlet Raiders are now 20-2-1 on the season, while Bowdoin finishes at 10-4-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team had much going on in the first half; both sides had four shots, and only Bowdoin put one on goal.

  • The Polar Bears came very close to scoring early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Levi Morant put one off of the right post from in close. Almost immediately thereafter, a teammate put one off of Morant's leg and it bounced just wide.

  • Rutgers-Newark almost went ahead in the 80th minute when Bowdoin goalie Steve Van Siclen made a diving save to his right on Chigozie's Atubi's shot.

  • The closest anyone came to scoring in either overtime period was in the 95th minute when the ball slipped through Van Siclen's hands but was cleared off of the line by midfielder Ryan Houseman.

THE SHOOTOUT

  • Rutgers-Newark's Fabio de Sousa started off penalty kicks with a make.

  • The next three combined tries were unsuccessful, leaving Rutgers-Newark up 1-0 after two full rounds.

  • The Scarlet Raiders made in the third round and missed in the fourth, while Bowdoin was successful in both rounds, leaving the score tied 2-2 with one round remaining.

  • Rutgers-Newark's Hubert Dul made the opening shot of the fifth round.

  • Andres Medina came up with a huge save on Bowdoin's Will Herman to clinch the shootout and keep the Scarlet Raiders' dance going.
