WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis men's soccer junior transfer Bryant Nardizzi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) scored the game's only goal early in the second half as the Judges outlasted the visiting Wheaton College Lyons and the rain for a 1-0 non-conference victory on Gordon Field tonight. The Judges even their record at 4-4, while Wheaton falls back to .500 at 5-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams played rather even in the first half, with Wheaton owning a 7-6 edge in shots and two shots on goal per team.
- The visitors looked to break the ice in the first minute of the second half, when Wheaton's Quinton Hay hit the far post, only to see the ball spin away from the goal line.
- Judge sophomore Noah Gans (Newton, Mass./Newton North) had the game's next three shots, but it was Nardizzi who got the Judges on the board.
- In the 53rd minute, he executed a terrific give-and-go with rookie Jared Panson (West Windsor, N.J. / Pennington School). Nardizzi fired a shot inside the near post to beat Lyon keeper Peter Pond.
- The goal was Nardizzi's team-leading fifth of the season.
- Brandeis junior goalie Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) made the save of the game in the 79th minute, when he punched a shot by Wheaton's Charlie Stringer off the post with a dive to his left.
- The Judges had a couple of free kick attempts thwarted by Pond late in the game, but Wheaton was unable to answer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis finished with a 17-13 edge in shots.
- Both goalies made four saves each.
- Irwin's shutout was his third of the season and fourth of his career.
- The Lyons had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
