PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw this afternoon in the team's University Athletic Association (UAA) opener at Carnegie Mellon University. The Judges move to 3-4-2 overall on the season, 0-0-1 in the UAA, while the Tartans move to 6-1-3, 0-0-1 UAA.
After a defensive first half in which CMU outshot Brandeis, 4-2, both teams scored within a five-minute span in the second. At the 50:04 mark, the Tartans' Jordi Long broke the deadlock when his shot from the right flank went into the upper-left corner over the head of Brandeis junior Aiden Guthro (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport).
Just under five minutes later, at the 54:55 mark, the Judges drew a foul about 20 yards from the goal. First-year back Andres Gonzalez (Doral, Fla. / Divine Savior Academy) came from his defensive position to take the free kick and blasted it past the Tartan wall and inside the near right post for his first collegiate goal.
The teams played back-and-forth the rest of the contest, but neither found a good look on goal, forcing overtime. Guthro made a save on CMU's Ethan Vertal in the 80th minute, and again in the 92nd. Brandeis senior Tim Bombeli (Zurich, Switzerland / IMG Academy) had a shot on net in the 103rd minute, but none of those stops were challenging and the game ended in the 1-1 draw. Guthro finished with four saves, one in each period. Carnegie Mellon's Ethan Kalis had one stop.
With the tie, Brandeis is now unbeaten in its last seven meeting with CMU, going 5-0-2 in that span.
Brandeis will look to get back to .500 with a match on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at MIT before hosting Case Western Reserve on Saturday, October 9, at 1:30 p.m. for Homecoming.
