The Brandeis men's and women's swimming and diving teams had one of their finest meets of the season this afternoon, winning 27 races in a non-scoring meet against Regis College. It was the last home meet for the squads' five seniors, who celebrated the occasion by each winning at least one event.
Esther Tandetnik (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) won the meet's first event, taking the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:15.93, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the next finisher.
Antonio Cancio (Hollywood, Fla./Miramar) was the next senior to win, finishing the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 32.30 seconds. Cancio also won the 500-yard freestyle, with his time of 6:20.51 cutting more than 10 seconds off of his seed time.
Holly Spicer (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) showed her diversity as a swimmer, as the breaststroke artist won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:11.21. Spicer also won the 50-yard breaststroke.
Jared Goldman (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) took the men's 100 fly in 1:00.84, while Niko Karkantis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Reg.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.88 seconds.
"These individuals really bought into everything that I brought onto the pool deck," coach Mike Kotch said in a pre-match ceremony celebrating the Class of 2013. "Overall, these five were just tremendous at helping us get this program restarted and heading in a great direction. So thank you to the five of you."
Junior Padraig Murphy (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) and rookie Lauren Cruz (Redmond, Wash./Hamilton East-Steinert) were both triple-winners for the Judges. Murphy won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.15, then took the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 25.43 seconds. He rounded things out with a victory in the 100-yard individual medley, finishing in 58.95 seconds.
Cruz won two backstroke events, finishing the 100 in 1:06.63 and the 200 in 2:21.48. She rounded out her day with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle, winning with a time of 5:47.04.
In addition to winning both the men's and women's freestyle relays, the Judges had five other individual winners on the day. Rookies Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon) and Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass./Mystic Valley Regional Charter Sch.) both were double-winners, while sophomore Eliza Kopelman (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Brookline) won the diving portion of the meet with a score of 322.50.
Brandeis is off until the University Athletic Association Championships, which begins February 13 at the University of Chicago.
