Swimmers sweep Bridgewater State on Senior Day

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams celebrated their final home meet of the season with a sweep of visiting Bridgewater State University. The men cruised, 157-97, winning all 16 events, while the women captured their first home victory under head coach Mike Kotch, 160-125.

      On the men's side, senior Max Fabian (Keene, N.H./Oak Meadow) was part of four victories in his final home appearance. He captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:09.69); the 200 butterfly in 2:04.70; the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.17; and anchored the winning 200 free relay to a time of 1:34.29 with a 23.98 split.

      The Judges had three other multiple winners in individual events on the men's side. Junior Brian Luk (Hong Kong/Northfield Mount Hermon) took the 200 freestyle in 1:49.41 and the 100 in 49.01 seconds. He was also on the winning 200 free and medley relays. Sophomore Edan Zitelny (Syosset N.Y./Syosset) took the backstroke events, winning the 50 in 27.14 seconds and the 200 in 2:10.66. Rookie diver Sam Zucker (Omaha, Neb./Anderson) won both one-meter events with scores of 220.85 and 152.60.

      Other winners for the men were junior David Lazarovich (Stowe, Vt./South Burlington) in the 50 breaststroke (29.83 seconds); rookie Abu Batjargal (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) in the 500 free (23.28 seconds); rookie Taku Harada (Henrico, Va. / Mills E. Godwin) in the 500 free (5:02.92); rookie Evan Thom (Natick, Mass./Natick) in the 50 butterfly (25.54 seconds); and rookie Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y. / Staten Island Academy) in the 100-yard individual medley (59.12 seconds).

 

On the women's side, sophomore Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) was a quadruple winner as well. She took the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:03.67; the 200 free in 2:03.14; and the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:26.13. She also swam the third leg on the winning 200 free relay, posting a 26.69 split as the Judges touched in 1:48.95.

Rookie Sherry Tu (Guangdong, China / Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women) picked up four wins as well. She had individual wins in the 50 free (26.42 seconds) and 50 fly (28.52 seconds) while swimming the lead leg on the 200 free relay and the third leg on the 200 medley (2:00.11).

Junior Fallon Bushee (Malden, Mass. / Mystic Valley Regional Charter Sch.) was part of the winning medley relay and took individual wins in the 50-yard breaststroke (34.41 seconds) and 100 free (57.48 seconds).

Other individual winners for the women were rookie Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass. / Framingham) in the 50 backstroke (30.49 seconds); rookie Abby Damsky (New York, N.Y. / The Brearley School) in the 200 back (2:28.86); and rookie Yi Sul Richter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Vista Ridge) in the 500 free (5:38.52).

Senior Gabby Drillich (Harrington Park, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) was third in the 200 backstroke (2:31.41) and in the 500 free (6:11.28) in her final home meet.

 

The Judges improve to 4-7 on the men's side and 2-9 on the women's side. They compete at Clark University next weekend before facing the University Athletic Association championships on Feb. 11.
