ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams had two more school records and several individuals contribute scoring performances on the second and third days of action at the 2016 University Athletic Association championships at the University of Rochester.
RELAY RECORDS
- The Judges rewrote the record books in both women's freestyle relays.
- Having set a mark in the 400 free relay on Day 1 (LINK), the Judges took down a mark on Day 2 in the 800.
- The quartet of junior Joanna Murphy (Sarasota, Fla./River View), sophomore Maya Saar (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus School for Girls), sophomore Amy Sheinhait(Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and rookie Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla./Cypress Hill) shaved two seconds off the previous record with a time of 8:05.37. The record had stood since 2008.
- On Day 3, the Judges completed a sweep of free relay record in the 400. The same team that had broken the 200 mark, consisting of Herman, sophomore Ariana Traub (Tiburon, Calif. / Redwood), sophomore Sherry Tu (Guandong, China/Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women (Rochester, N.Y.) and Sheinhait did it again.
- The Judges took about a second-and-a-half off the previous record, which had been set in 2009, with a time of 3:39.61.
- Both record swims were good for 8th place in the UAA.
EDAN ZITELNY
- The top overall individual at the meet for the Judges was men's junior Edan Zitelny(Sysosset, N.Y./Syosset).
- Zitelny had two top-20 finishes on the final day of action. He improved his third-best time in Brandeis swimming history in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.23, good for 18thplace.
- On the same day in the 200 butterfly, he swam 1:58.27, good for 20th place.
- Zitelny also swam the lead leg of the 200-yard medley relay with a school-record in the 50-yard backstroke. His split of 25.06 seconds broke a record that had stood since 2002, one of the two-oldest swimming records on the Brandeis books.
KYLIE HERMAN
- Rookie Kylie Herman for the women was the only other Judges to reach the evening session in multiple events on the last two days of competition.
- In the last individual swimming event of the meet, Herman turned in a 20th-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.65, fourth-fastest in program history.
- Herman also finished in 22nd place in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 1:56.90 was a mere four-hundredths of a second off the seven-year-old school record.
MILERS
- The team's top overall finish by a swimmer came in the 1,650 free.
- Women's school record holder Joanna Murphy finished seventh in her heat and 14th overall with a time of 18:01.65, 0.52 seconds out of 11th place.
- Senior Theresa Gaffney (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) also scored the for the women in the mile, taking 23rd place with a time of 19:31.40.
- Sophomore Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island) scored three points for the men in the mile with a time of 16:46.75, about three seconds off his season-best.
- Diamond also earned a point for the Judges in the 400-yard individual medley, where he placed 24th with a time of 4:14.67, improving his fifth-best time in program history.
DIVING
- Sophomore Sam Zucker (Omaha, Neb./Anderson) placed 13th in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 263.65.
TEAM SCORING
- The Brandeis women finished in eighth with 331 points, exceeding their total from 2015 by 38 for the highest point total for BUSDT 2.0.
- The men finished with 310 points, down 81 from a year ago.
