BUSDT men pick up first win over Wheaton in 2.0 era

NORTON, Mass. – The Brandeis swimming and diving teams opened their 2017-18 dual meet season today with a trip to Wheaton College. The men picked up a 156-138 victory, the Judges' first over the Lyons in their BUSDT 2.0 incarnation. The women suffered a 191-104 defeat.

Combined the teams won 11 races – eight for the men and three for the women.

Rookie Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) was the big star on the day for the men, winning three individual events and one relay. He captured two middle-distance freestyle events, taking the 200 in 1:50.84 and the 500 in 5:01.93. He also captured the 200 butterfly in 2:05.11. Rookie Chase Chen (Villanova, Pa./The Hill School) had an impressive afternoon, winning the freestyle sprints. Chen took the 50 in 22.64 seconds and the 100 in 49.64 seconds. Individual winners were senior Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy), who gave the Judges a sweep of the freestyle events by taking the 1000 in 10:50.11 , and sophomore Tamir Zitelny (Sysosset, N.Y./Syosset), who captured the 100 fly in 55.16 seconds. The Judges' also picked up a win in the final event of the day, the 400 free relay, with rookies Marcelo Ohno Machado (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) joining Selznick and Chen to win by 0.22 seconds with a time of 3:18.33.

The Judges also had a pair of 1-2-3 finishes in the butterfly events. In the 200, sophomore Matt Arcemont (Santa Ana, Calif. / Mater Dei) and Diamond finished behind Selznick, while Arcemont and sophomore Daniel Haid (Robbins, N.C. / International School of Lausanne) were behind Zitelny in the 100.

On the women's side, Brandeis had three wins, all from rookies. Talia Bornstein (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) was a double winner in the distance free races, winning the 500 in 5:39.95 and the 1000 in 11:39.83. Emily McGovern (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) captured the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:33.97.  

The Judges return to action next weekend with a road trip to New York. They will meet Hartwick College on Friday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. and Vassar College Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m.
