ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Brandeis swimming and diving teams earned a split in their second-straight dual meet of the season as the Judges won 15 of 32 events in a meet against Hartwick College. The men pulled out nine wins in a 156-132 victory, while the women earned six wins but lost to the Hawks, 175.5-112.5.
There were three multiple winners in individual events for the Judges. For the men, rookie Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verde) continued his fine campaign with distance freestyle wins in the 1000, where his time of 10:22.14 was 21 seconds faster than the runner-up, and in the 500, where he defeated his closest opponent by almost six seconds with a time of 5:00.81. Also for the men, senior Sam Zucker (Omaha, Neb./Anderon) earned top marks in both diving events, taking the 1-meter with a score 170.70 and the 3-meter with a total of 184.85.
For the women, rookie Emily McGovern (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) swept the breaststroke events, winning the 50 in 33.21 seconds and the 100 in 1:12.56.
The closest race of the day was won by rookie Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill East), who took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.74, winning by just one-hundredth of a second over Hartwick's Ryan McLaughlin. Wohl was also runner-up in the 100 breaststroke and 100 IM.
Three other individual winners for the men were sophomore Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), who took the 100-yard butterfly in 54.15 seconds, nearly two seconds faster than the runner-up; rookie Chase Chen (Villanova, Pa./The Hill School) in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.77 seconds; and sophomore Daniel Haid (Robbins, N.C. / International School of Lausanne).
On the women's side, individual event winners were senior Amy Sheinheit (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), who won the 50 back by 0.64 seconds; rookie Audrey Kim (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) in the 100 bac with a time of 1:04.70, almost three seconds ahead of the next swimmer. The Judges won the final two events of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relays. For the women, rookie Sofia Chevez (New York, N.Y./Beacon School), senior Amy Sheinheit, senior Abby Damsky (New York, N.Y./The Brearly School) and rookie Annie Huang (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) won with a time of 1:46.04, just eight-hundredths of a second faster than Hartwick. The men were even closer, as Chen and fellow rookie Marcelo Ohno-Machado (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) were joined by senior Taku Harada (Henrico, Va./Mills E. Godwin) and Zitelny with a time of 1:30.05 for a 0.02 second finish.
The Judges turn right around and meet Vassar College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
