Judges Swimming and Diving Finish in Eighth at Gompei Invitational

The Brandeis Judges Swimming and Diving Team finished eighth out of thirteen teams in WPI's Gompei Invitational over the weekend with a total score of 1753. This result was an improvement on last year's ninth place finish with 1005.5 total points.

Saturday

The both the men and women's team finished in eighth place with a score of 1281 for the women and 1309 for the men. 

Rookie Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) helped the lead men's team with a school recorded-setting performance in the 200 yard freestyle. Wohl finished in second with a time of 1:41.71. Sophomore Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, NY / Syosset) also set a school record by finishing second in the 100 yard backstroke (50.38). Daniel Haid (Robbins, N.C. / International School of Lausanne) also had a strong showing in the event with an 11th place finish in 54.13, second fastest in Judges' history. 

First-year Richie Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev. / Palo Verde High School) tied for second in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:11.85. The Judges also faired well in the 50 yard backstroke with Haid finishing second (24.84), Tom Alger (Plymouth, Mass. / Sacred Heart) finishing 10th (26.21), Joe Beletti-Naccarato (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central) finishing 12th (26.88) and Ben Francis (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Brooklyn Friends School) finishing thirteenth (27.07). 

Senior Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass. / Framingham) built on her impressive performance from Friday with a sixth place finish in the 50 yard backstroke (28.40). Philippa Zheku (Woburn, Mass. / Woburn Memorial) finished in 20th in the same race with a time of 30.15. Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) also had a good day, finishing 16th in the 400 yard IM (4:49.14).

Sunday

The Judges followed up Saturday's performance with a pair of eighth place finishes on Sunday. The women scored a total of 1701 points while the men scored scored 1753.

Sophomore Tamir Zitelny led the way for the Judges with a pair of top-ten finishes. Zitelny took bronze in the 200 yard fly (1:53.82) and finished 10th in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.11. Rookie Daniel Wohl continued his strong season with a 15th place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (47.75). Daniel Haid continued his strong invitational by placing 17th in the 200 yard backstroke (1:59.60). Tom Alger, Taku Harada (Henrico, Va. / Mills E. Godwin), and Ben Francis also placed 24, 25, and 26 in the race, respectively. Richie Selznick also had an impressive performance, finish eighth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:47.99. Senior Richard Avrustry (Needham, Mass. / Needham) secured a 10th place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke (28.69)

Kylie Herman continued to impress in the third day of the Gompei Invitational. She finished 13th in the 500 yard freestyle (5:17.54) and 25th in the 200 yard butterfly (2:18.04). The women's team benefited from strong efforts by first-years. Rookie Audrey Kim's ( Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) performance was highlighted by a 15th place finish in the 100 yard IM (1:04.68) and Rachel Goldblatt (Atlanta, GA / Galloway School) took 16th place in the 200 yard butterfly. Additionally for the rookies, Annie Huang (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) finished 22nd in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 54.50. 

The Judges Swimming and Diving Team will look to take this momentum into Saturday, Dec. 9th, a home matchup with Colby College.
