Zitelny sets two records, records NCAA 'B' cut on Day 3 at UAAs

ATLANTA, Ga. – After a successful preliminary round in the morning, six Brandeis University school records fell tonight on the third night of action at the 2018 University Athletic AssociationSwimming and Diving Championships at Emory University.

TAMIR ZITELNY'S BIG DAY

  • Leading the way for the Judges was sophomore Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), who had the team's top two performances for the men.
  • Zitelny turned in the team's top performance to date at the meet in the 100-yard backstroke. His time of 50.24 seconds in the 'B' final won the race for a ninth-place finish. He lowered his own school record in the event by 0.13 seconds and met the 'B' Standard for the NCAA Championships, the second time in his career Zitelny has achieved that feat.
  • Zitelny also finished in 10th place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.22 seconds, shaving four-hundredths of a second of his previous school record In the process.

MEN'S ROOKIE PERFORMANCES

  • A pair of first-year performers reached the top 15, setting one new record in the process.
  • Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) finished in 12th place in the 200-yard freestyle and lowered his own school record by 0.31 seconds to 1:41.34.
  • Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verde) came in 13th in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:07.03, moving into second place on Brandeis's all-time list in the event.

WOMEN'S RECORD PERFORMANCES

  • In the opening race of the evening session, the 200-yard medley relay, the Brandeis women broke two records in one race. The quartet of senior Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and rookies Emily McGovern (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham), Rachel Goldblatt (Atlanta, GA / Galloway School) and Annie Huang (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) took 1.5 seconds off the previous school record with a time of 1:50.32.
  • Sheinhait broke her third individual mark of the meet with her opening backstroke leg, swimming the 50 yards in 27.76 seconds, lowering her own mark.
  • Goldblatt also set a school record with a split, swimming 26.83 seconds for the first 50 yards of the 100 butterfly, lowering the mark she had set earlier in the day. Her final time of 58.70 seconds was good for 20th place.

OTHER SCORING SWIMS

  • In the women's 100 breaststroke, McGovern was the 24th and final qualifier for the evening session, but she took nearly two seconds off her time in the finals to finish in 19th place. Her time was 1:07.42, moving into fourth all-time on the school's record list.
  • In the men's 100 breaststroke, senior Richard Avrutsky (Needham, Mass. / Needham) finished 21st with a time of 59.94 seconds, while rookie Lance Babcock (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) was 23rd with a time of 1:11.27.

WOMEN'S 3-METER DIVING

  • The women also had three scoring performances in the 3-meter diving event.
  • Junior Julia Tartaglia (Newton, Mass. / Newton South) was 19th with a score of 250.65, rookie Tessa Carreiro (New Bedford, Mass. / New Bedford)was 20th at 229.85, and senior Genna Karp (Springfield, N.J. / Golda Och Academy) was 21st at 178.00/

TEAM STANDINGS

  • The Judges sit in eighth place in both standings. The men are close to seventh-place Rochester, tallying 366 points, just 26 behind the Yellowjackets. The women have 312.5 points, 111.5 behind Rochester in seventh.
