ATLANTA, Ga. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams wrapped up the 2018 University Athletic Association championships at Emory University with the team's best point totals under head coach Mike Kotch. The men tallied 472 points, while the women had 381.5 as both squads finished in eighth place. The Judges set three school records in the process.
Sophomore Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) set a new school record for the second day in a row, lowering his own mark in the 200-yard butterfly by 0.68 seconds with a time of 1:52.06. He earned 17th place by winning the 'C' Final, though his time was the 10th-fastest of the final session of the meet.
The Judges also closed out the meet with a pair of records in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Zitelny swam the anchor leg for the seventh-place men's team, along with rookies Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill), Chase Chen (Villanova, Pa. / The Hill School) and Marcelo Ohno-Machado (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines), as they turned in a time of 3:08.86. On the women's side, the Judges' quartet of senior Amy Sheinhait (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), rookie Rachel Goldblatt (Atlanta, Ga./ Galloway School), junior Kylie Herman (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) and rookie Annie Huang (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) placed eighth with a new mark of 3:38.17. Huang set the mark on her birthday.
Rookie Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verde) turned in the second-fastest time in Brandeis history in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:22.37. Selznick lowered his personal-best time by nearly 20 seconds, and now sits 16 seconds off the school record. He placed 15th overall. Senior Zach Diamond (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) also scored in the mile with a time of 17:01.16, good for 23rd place. In the women's mile, rookie Leah Kunins (Gulfport, Fla. / St. Petersburg) - also celebrating a birthday - scored by finishing 24th with a time of 20:02.87.
The Judges had two other swimmers place 23rd, both in the 200 breaststroke. Rookie Emily McGovern (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) turned in the third-fastest time in the women's team history with a time of 2:28.59, while classmate Daniel Wohl also scored in the event with a time of 2:10.65.
Senior Sam Zucker (Omaha, Neb./Anderson) added a 14th-place finish in the men's 1-meter diving with a score of 317.25.
Outside of the scoring performances, Amy Sheinhait moved into third place all time on the Judges' list in the 100 free with a time of 54.47 seconds. Marcelo Ohno-Machado entered the top 10 on the men's 100 free list with a time of 48.06 seconds, good for ninth all-time.
The Judges will close out their season next weekend at the ECAC Championships at Rutgers University.
