Judges pick up three wins in meet against Tufts

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University swimming and diving teams lost a pair of home meets to nationally-ranked foes from Tufts today, picking up three individual wins in the process. The men fell to the #11-ranked Jumbos, 222-74, while the women dropped a 252-44 decision to the #8 Tufts squad.

All three wins came on the men's side. Junior Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hills, N.C./East Chapel Hill) was the first winner, taking the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.71, edging the runner-up from Tufts by 0.14 seconds. He was also the runner-up in the 100 free with a time of 48.85 seconds.

Sophomore Brendon Lu (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning by one-tenth of a second over his opponent, 1:01.77 to 1:01.87. Lu also had a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.13. He scored one additional point with a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Senior Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) rounded out the Judge winners in the most emphatic victory for the home team, claiming the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.71 seconds, more than half a second ahead of the runner-up. Zitelny also had a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke in which he was edged by 0.14 seconds in 24.70.

The Judges also had two scorers in the 100 fly, where rookie James Barno (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) was second in 54.59 seconds and senior Justin Weissberg (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) was fourth in 55.56 seconds.

On the women's side, the best finishes were third places from rookie Bailey Gold (Berkley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.36 and sophomore Olivia Stebbins (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) in the 50 breaststroke in 33.52 seconds.
