Brandeis in 10th place after Day one of Gompei Invite

Waltham, Mass.- Day One of the Gompei Invitational hosted by WPI proved tough for the Judges against stiff competition. Of the competing teams, noteworthy inclusions were D1 Bryant, D1 Merrimack Women, and D2 Bentley/St. Rose. Through the first day of events, the Brandeis combined Swimming and Diving team find themselves in 10thplace with a total of 555.5 points.

 

While podium finishes were hard to come by, the Judges displayed their depth as 25 different swimmers contributed points for the team. Brandeis was led by senior Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) who was a part of 184 points on the first day. Zitelny's performance was highlighted by a huge first place finish in the Men's 100-yard Freestyle race, the only podium appearance of the day for the Judges. First-year James Barno (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) continued his stellar rookie season by having the second most points on the team with 138 on the day. Barno, along with sophomore Brendon Lu (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), junior Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), and Zitelny would finish ninth in the Men's 200 Yard Medley Relay. Lu had a solo top-ten finish as well, as he finished seventh in the Men's 200-yard Breaststroke. Junior Richard Selznick (Las Vegas, Nev./Palos Verde)had his own top-ten result, finishing in seventh for the Men's 1650-yard Freestyle race.

 

For the women, first-year Bailey Gold (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston)was the points leader, accounting for 126 points. In addition to fine relay performances, Gold achieved a top-ten result in the Women's 100-yard Butterfly, finishing sixth. Teammate and fellow first-year Ema Rennie (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto)finished just behind Gold with 124.5 points of her own, highlighted by a seventh-place finish in the Women's 50-yard Freestyle. The Judges 200-yard Medley Relay team of Gold, Rennie, junior Audrey Kim (Livingston, N.J./Livingston), and sophomore Olivia Stebbins (Willington, CT./ Edwin O. Smith) got the other top ten finish for Brandeis, as they placed ninth.
