LEWISTON, Maine – The Brandeis men's tennis team had one of its top showings at the James Wallach Invitational last weekend at Bates College. The Judges had one flight champion, two finalists and two additional semifinalists.

D SINGLES FLIGHT

• The Judges' top performance came in the D singles flight, where sophomore Harshil Dwivedi (Greenwood Village, Colo. / Cherry Creek) defeated rookie Benjamin Wolfe (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) in the championship match.
• Dwivedi lost just one set en route to the title. He topped Philliip Winsor of Trinity, 6-2, 6-3, in the opening round, then took out Aidan McGrory of Bowdoin, 6-0, 6-4, in the second round in his easiest match.
• In the semis, Dwivedi topped Jason Keye of Skidmore in an extended tiebreaker in the second set to complete the sweep, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8).
• Wolfe, on the other hand, played three-set matches in three of his four contests and specialized in extended tiebreakers. He came back to defeat Jack McLaren of Skidmore in the opener, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 12-10. Against Luis Cuervo of Bowdoin in the second round, Wolfe again dropped the first set before rallying, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
• In his only two-set match, the semifinal against Nils Akesson of Skidmore, Wolfe finally won the first set, but not before a long tiebreaker, 7-6 (12-10), 6-4.
• The teammates met in the championship match, with Wolfe claiming the first set, 6-3.
• Dwivedi bounced back for a 7-5 win in the second, then won the hardware with an 11-9 super tiebreaker win.

A DOUBLES

• The other Judges to reach a final were the doubles team of sophomore Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y. / Great Neck South) and rookie David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park), who competed in the A Singles bracket.
• The Brandeis pair opened with an 8-6 win over the fourth-seeded tandem of Leung and Kouloris from Skidmore, then bounced Ordway and Ellis of host Bates by the same score.
• In the semifinals, the young Judges upset top-seeded Wolfe and Jiang of Bowdoin, who had won the ITA Northeast Regional a week earlier. The final was a 9-8 victory for Brandeis.
• The Judges couldn't knock off a third seeded duo, falling to Reid and Murad of Colby, 8-2, in the title match.
• Brandeis had nearly knocked Reid and Murad out of the tournament in the second round, as senior Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and sophomore Jackson Kogan (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Windward School) won their first round, 8-3 against Trinity before falling 9-8 to the eventual champs.

SINGLES SEMIFINALISTS

• Senior Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) reached the A flight singles semifinals by upsetting third-seeded Kyle Wolfe of Bowdoin in the opening round, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and Jacob Kauppila of host Bates, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round. He fell to Rohan Gupte of Tufts, 5-7, 2-6, in the semis.
• Ng turned in the best all-around singles and doubles performance, as he also reached the semifinals of the B singles flight. He rolled past Willilam Frigidierio of Trinity, 6-1, 6-0, in his opener and knocked off Nate Neimiec of Tufts, 6-2, 6-3, in the second round. In a marathon semifinal, Ng lost to eventual champion Lucas Pickering of Skidmore, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 8-10.

The Judges close the fall portion of their schedule this weekend at the MIT Invitational.
