#30 men's tennis improves to 3-0 with wins over Glendale CC and Whittier

GLENDALE and WHITTIER, California – The 30th-ranked Brandeis University men's tennis team improved to 3-0 on Wednesday evening as the squad split to take on Glendale Community College and Whittier College as part of their annual trip to California. The Judges defeated JuCo GCC, 7-2, and Division III Whittier, 8-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GCC

  • Brandeis took a 2-1 lead after doubles, then won 5 of 6 singles matches against the Vacqueros.
  • Seniors Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Jeff Cherkin (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) took an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores Harshil Dwivedi (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Jordan Brodie (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) took an 8-4 decision at No. 3.
  • Local product Jackson Kogan (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Windward School) had the most dramatic singles win for the Judges, winning a pair of tiebreakers by the same 7-4 score for a 7-6, 7-6 win.
  • Sophomore Ethan Saal (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Abraham Joshua Heschel School) returned from injury to take a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 3, while sophomore Billy Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif. / The Buckley School) lost just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WHITTIER

  • Brandeis swept doubles against the Poets and won three of six singles matches in straight sets, while taking two three-set wins.
  • Sophomore Zach Cihlar (Phoenix, Ariz. / Brophy College Prep.) lost just five games in his two matches. He teamed with junior Eric Goldberg (Solon, Ohio / Solon) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles and earned a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 6 singles.
  • Senior Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) outlasted his foe at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while rookie Benjamin Wolfe (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) took a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 5, 2-6, 7-5, 10-4.
