REDLANDS and CLAREMONT, California - The 30th-ranked Brandeis University men's tennis team suffered their first defeat of the season on Friday afternoon at the hands of #18 Redlands by a 7-2 score. The Judges fall to 3-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 3-1. The Judges proceeded to fall to #6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps the next afternoon with a much closer score of 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED- REDLANDS
- The Judges went down 0-3 after doubles, then won 2 of 6 singles matches against the Bulldogs.
- The closest doubles match was at No. 2, where rookie David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore Tyler Ng(Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) dropped an 8-6 decision to Brad Cummins and Chase Lipscomb of Redlands.
- Although all the matches were close, senior Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) at No. 3 and sophomore Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) at No. 4 were the only ones to win. Granoff pulled it out in 3 sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 while Ng toughed it out to win in a third-set super-tiebreaker 7-5, 5-7, 10-5.
- Seniors Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) at No. 1 and Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) at No. 2 had close matches, falling 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED- CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS
- Brandeis took a 2-1 lead after doubles, then won 2 of 6 singles matches.
- Seniors Michael Arguello (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) and Ryan Bunis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton-Dunstable, Mass.) took an 8-6 win at the top spot.
- Rookie David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) won 8-5 at No. 2.
- Senior Brian Granoff (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) at No. 3 and sophomore Jackson Kogan (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Windward School) at No. 5 both pulled out 3 set wins. Granoff pulled it out 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 while Kogan won 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
- Granoff went 4-0 in singles action in California.
