#20 men's tennis engineers win over RPI, 5-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – The 20th-ranked Brandeis men's tennis team fought back a battle from unranked but unbeaten Rensselaer today, 5-3. The Judges improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Engineers suffered their first loss to fall to 3-1.

Doubles action saw a pair of tiebreakers as the Judges took a 2-1 lead. Brandeis won at No. 1, where sophomore David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and rookie Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J. / Phillips Andover) were 9-8 (7-3) victors, but RPI's Brian Niguidula and Tristan Wise won by the exact same score at No. 3. The Judges claimed the lead at No. 3 with a late break of serve that gave junior Tyler Ng (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) and sophomore Benjamin Wolfe (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon).

In singles action, Brandeis rookie Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y. / North Shore)  bounced back nicely from his doubles loss with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3. RPI's Sebastian Castillo Sanchez avenged his doubles loss to Aizenberg with a 7-5, 6-4, win at No. 1 singles. Coramutla picked up a win in his second singles match of the spring, outlasting Andrew Imrie, 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, to give the Judges a 4-1 lead.

The second wave of matches a pair of three-setters. Ng had two long tiebreakers at No. 4, winning 12-10 in the first set and losing, 7-9 in the second before Niguidula won a super-tiebreaker in the third set, 10-6. The match was clinched by Brandeis rookie Nikhil Das (Smithfield, R.I. / Moses Brown School) at No. 5, who used a late break of serve to win, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Wolfe's match at No. 6 went unfinished, accounting for the final score.

Brandeis is back in action next Saturday at the Natick Racquet Club when the Judges take on third-ranked Middlebury.
