#8 men's tennis falls to D1 Bryant, 5-2

CUMBERLAND, R.I. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team, ranked #8 in Division III, dropped a 5-2 decision to Division I opponent Bryant University on the road today. With the loss, the Judges fall to 2-3 overall, including 1-1 against out-of-division opponents. The Bulldogs improve to 9-12.

The match was played with Division I rules, including six-game sets in doubles, doubles accounting for a single point in the scoring, and no-ad games.

Bryant went ahead by winning the doubles point. Brandeis took the first match at #1, with senior David Aizenberg (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and junior Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J./Phillips Andover) winning 6-3. The Bulldogs won both #2 and #3 doubles by 6-2 scores to take the 1-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1 through the first three matches. Senior Guido Argentini avenged his doubles loss to Aizenberg at #1, 6-2, 6-1. Coramutla got Brandeis on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #2 with his second win over junior Trent Massam. Sophomore Alexander Schou defeated Brandeis's Rajan Vohra (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) at #3, 6-4, 6-4.

The three matches at the bottom of the lineup were a series of marathons, including two rallies from a set down. At #4, Nikhil Das (Smithfield, R.I./Moses Brown School) bounced back to defeat Teague Burger, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, to make the score 3-2. The Judges had an opportunity to comeback, but Bryant's Nick Lorenz defeated sophomore Nico Ramirez (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep), 6-1, 7-6, at #5 to clinch victory. The match finished up at #6, where sophomore Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./James Madison Memorial) couldn't hold off Grant Pertile, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The Judges return to action on March 15th when they travel to #3-ranked Middlebury, where they will face their third top-four opponent of the season.
