Men's tennis suffers first loss of season, 8-1, at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Brandeis men's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season, dropping an 8-1 decision to Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. The match was much closer than the final score indicated, with two doubles matches and two singles matches coming down to tiebreakers in favor of the home team. With the loss, the Judges fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Ephs improve to 3-0.

In doubles action, Williams got on the board first with an 8-5 win at #1, as the team of Calvin Chung and Arturo Kam knocked of Brandeis's Adam Tzeng (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) and Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill./New Trier). Both #2 and #3 went the distance, with Williams prevailing, 8-7 (7-5) in both matches, to give the Ephs a 3-0 lead.

In singles play, Williams won the first three matches in straight sets to clinch the victory. Kam defeated Anupreeth Coramutla (Monroe Township, N.J./Phillips Andover), 6-0, 6-3, at #1. Chase Cohen gave the home team the victory at #4 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./Madison Memorial). Karan Amin defeated Nikhil Das (Smithfield, R.I./Moses Brown) at #6, 6-2, 6-4.  

The final three matches saw the Judges earn a win and two narrow losses. Tzeng won his first set at #2, 6-1, but lost the second, 6-4. In the third-set super-tiebreaker, Austin Barr prevailed, 13-11. Chen finally got the Judges on the board with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, win at #3. Rookie Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) fought Noah Reich in a marathon at #5 before falling, 5-7, 6-4, 10-12.

The Judges return to action on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. against Division I Merrimack College.
