WALTHAM, Mass. – Four members of the historic 2021 Brandeis University men's tennis team have earned All-University Athletic Association honors. Anupreeth Coramutla '21 of Monroe Township, New Jersey, was recognized for first singles and second doubles, along with partner Colt Tegtmeier '22 of Madison, Wisconsin. The first doubles team of Jeffrey Chen '22 of Northfield, Illinois, and Adam Tzeng '22 of Eagle, Idaho, were recognized both for doubles and at third and second singles, respectively.
Coramutla earned his sixth and seventh career All-Association honor, having been recognized for doubles in each of his first three seasons and singles as a sophomore and junior. Coramutla moved into the top spot for the Judges after playing second singles earlier in his career and posted a 6-4 record. Ranked among the top eight in the Northeast region this season, he earned his first NCAA Division III Individual tournament berth in singles. In the first round, he defeated Jeremy Yuan of the University of Chicago, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, to become the first Judge to advance past the first round since 1989. Coramutla earned his second career All-America honor in the process. He was a doubles selection in 2020. He finished his career with 95 total victories in singles and doubles, including a 61-21 doubles mark, the highest win total by any Brandeis player over the last 20 years.
Tegtmeier and Coramutla went 6-2 at second doubles this season, with one additional win at first doubles. They were a key factor in the Judges being ahead in doubles in seven of their 10 matches this season. This is Tegtmeier's first career All-UAA selection. He also went 4-2 and fourth and sixth singles this season. Tegtmeier owns 39 career wins for the Judges.
Chen and Tzeng each earned All-UAA honors for the third year in a row in doubles. They moved up from second to first doubles this year and turned in one of the finest seasons in program history. After going 4-4 in dual matches, including 2-1 in the NCAA tournament, Chen and Tzeng earned All-America honors by making a run to the finals of the NCAA Division III Doubles championship. After a 6-0, 6-2, win in the first round over opponents from Christopher Newport, they defeated the top-seeded team from Case Western Reserve, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Chen and Tzeng had another come-from-behind win in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), against Gustavus Adolphus. In the finals, a duo from Carleton College that included the Division III singles champion, emerged with a 6-3, 6-2, win. In both their quarterfinal and semifinal matches, Chen and Tzeng fought off three match points to secure the win and secure their status as All-Americans. In three seasons as a duo, Chen and Tzeng are now 27-9 for their career as a pairing.
In singles action, Chen put together a team-best 6-1 record, mostly at third singles. Among his wins were the clinching point in the team's 5-3 victory over Southern Virginia University that put Brandeis in the NCAA Division III Team tournament quarterfinals. Tzeng, the 2019 UAA Rookie of the Year, went 2-5, but picked up two key wins, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, in a regular-season win against Tufts that helped secure the team's first NCAA Tournament berth since 1989, and 6-1, 6-0, in the team's opening second-round win over Grove City College. That was the first postseason win in program history.
The Brandeis men's tennis team finished the 2021 season with an 8-2 record under second-year head coach Pauri Pandian. The Judges received the second NCAA Division III Tournament berth in program history, earning the team's first-ever win, 5-0, over Grove City, and advancing to their first-ever quarterfinals with a 5-3 win over Southern Virginia. The Judges fell in the quarters to eventual champion Emory. The Judges return all but two of their NCAA tournament starters in 2021-22.
