Men's tennis knocks off cross-town rivals Bentley, 9-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team opened its 2022 season in style today as they defeated their cross-town rivals from Division II Bentley University, 9-0. The Judges improve to 1-0, while the Falcons fall to 5-1.

Brandeis started with a solid doubles sweep, losing just six games in the three matches. Seniors Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and Adam Tzeng (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) opened the scoring with an 8-3 win over Daniel Weitz and Connor Aulson at #1. At the #3 spot, senior Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./Madison Memorial) and junior Hunter Levine (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) defeated Alex Novins and Noah Monsanto, 8-1. The Judges completed the sweep at #2, where first-year Colin Fox (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier) and sophomore Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman School) knocked off Max Bonte and Jordan Soifer, 8-2.

In singles action, Tzeng defeated Weitz for the second time in the match, 6-4, 6-3, at #1 singles. The match was clinched at #3 when Fox defeated Soifer for the second time, 6-2, 6-2. Chen outlasted Aulson at #2 in a first-set tiebreaker to win, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, to wrap up the first flight of matches.

Brandeis showed resilience at the bottom of the lineup, winning two matches in super tiebreakers after losing first sets. After junior Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo. / Marquette H.S.) rolled at #4, 6-0, 6-2, over Novins, the Judges earned the final two points in three sets. At #4, Walters defeated Bonte, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4, while at #6, Tegtmeier rallied to defeat Gabe Horwitz, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.

The Judges return to action next Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Weymouth Club in Weymouth, Mass., when they host their second-straight Division II opponent, Franklin Pierce College.
