CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Brandeis University men's tennis team won the first five matches today to defeat Gustavus Adolphus College in the consolation semifinals of the 2022 ITA Division III Championships, 6-3. With the win, the Judges improve to 4-1 on the season and advance to face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tomorrow in the fifth-place match. The Gusties fall to 5-3 and will meet Emory for seventh place.

Brandeis started strong with a doubles sweep. At #2, first-year Colin Fox (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier) and sophomore Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman School) rolled to an 8-2 win in 33 minutes. The #3 team of senior Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./James Madison Memorial) and junior Hunter Levine (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) took an 8-5 decision. In the final match of the day, a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Division III Doubles Tournament semifinals, Brandeis seniors Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and Adam Tzeng (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) faced the Golden Gusties' Nick Aney and Alex Budde. As it did in 2021, the teams needed a tiebreaker to decide things, and the Judges prevailed again, 8-7 (7-4).

In singles action, Tegtmeier knocked off GAC's Marco Silviera at #5, 6-1, 7-5 in an hour and 20 minutes. Chen then defeated Aney for the second time in the match, 6-4, 6-4, to complete the victory. Chen broke twice in the last three games in each set to take the victory.

GAC had the edge in the final four matches, winning three. Walters picked up the sixth point at #4 with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph. The Gusties won in straight sets at #3 and #6, and pulled out a very tight match at #1, where Neel Raut edged Tzeng, 6-2, 6-7, 12-10 in the supertiebreaker.

Brandeis will meet Claremont-Mudd-Scripps colleges tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
