Fox and Walters finish weekend unbeaten but men fall to CMS, 5-1, in ITA Indoors 5th place match

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The fifth-seeded Brandeis University men's tennis team suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of third-seeds Claremont-Mudd-Scripps today in the fifth-place match at the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association D3 Indoor Championships at Case Western Reserve. The Judges fall to 4-2 on the season, while the Stags improve to 6-2.

Brandeis fell behind after doubles for the first time this season. The #2 pairing of first-year Colin Fox (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and sophomore Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) knocked off Ian Freer and Ethan Carrol, 8-6, to finish an undefeated weekend, but the Stags won 8-5 at #1 and 8-3 at #3.

CMS then took the first three singles matches to end the overall match. Sophomore Aaron Basye (Mission Viejo, Calif. / Tesoro) fell to Matthew Robinson, 6-1, 6-2, at #6, while senior Jeffrey Chen (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision at #2. The Stags finished things off at #5, where Christopher Li defeated senior Colt Tegtmeier (Madison, Wisc./James Madison Memorial), 6-4, 6-2.

Brandeis had won the first set in the three matches that were suspended at the conclusion of the day. At #1, senior Adam Tzeng (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) won the opener, 6-4, against Robert Liu, ranked fifth in Division III, while Fox led Carroll, 6-4, 3-4, in the #3 spot. Walters and Freer split, 6-3, 0-6, at #4.

Brandeis returns to action next Sunday afternoon, March 6, with a 1 p.m. match at Skidmore College.
