WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team turned in the Judges' first win of the spring. season, defeating Division II St. Michael's College, 6-3, indoors at the Gosman Athletic Center today.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 1-0, ranked #27 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
- St. Michael's, 0-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges took two of three doubles matches for the early 2-1 lead. Junior Dylan Walters (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) teamed with first-year Tommy Harrison (London, England/National Extension College) to roll to an 8-1 win at #1.
- At #2 doubles, senior Simon Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette H.S.) and classmate Hunter Levine (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) were 8-4 victors.
- SMC got on the board at #3 with an 8-5 win by Mathis Billman and Jackson Mosier.
- Harrison earned his second win of the day at #2 singles with a 6-3, 6-1, over Mosier.
- The Purple Knights got a win from Josh Weiss over Walters at #1, 6-4, 6-3.
- First-year Alex Merson (Palisades Park, N.J./Tenafly) gave the Judges a 4-2 lead headed into the back half of the lineup with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #3.
- The clinching win came from Levine at #5 singles with a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Billman.
- Kauppila finished out the Brandeis scoring with a narrow, 7-5, 6-4, win at #4.
- St. Michael's earned the final point of the match with a marathon win at #6, where Sergio Barroso outlasted Brandeis junior Chen Liang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai Pinghe School), 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 10-5.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This was the first-ever meeting between Brandeis and St. Michael's in men's tennis.
- The win marked the first as head coach for Christo Schultz, who had spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach of the men's and women's programs.

- The Judges take on their second-straight Division II opponent, Franklin Pierce College, next Saturday at 1 p.m.
- SMC hosts St. Lawrence University next Thursday at 12 p.m.
