CAMBRIDGE and SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- At the 2011 New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships today, five Brandeis student-athletes were honored with All-Region accolades. The Judges had three top-three finishes on the day, as the women placed 14th overall with 19.3 points at MIT, while the men took 19th place with six points at Springfield.
On the men's side, the Judges' top performance was turned in by rookie Vincent Asante (Bronx, N.Y./High School for the Arts, Imagination and Inquiry) in the 55-meter dash. Asante won his heat with a time of 6.62 seconds to qualify for the finals in the fourth slot, then improved to 6.55 seconds in the finals to finish in third place. It put Asante just one-hundredth of a second off the school record in the 55 meters and five-one-hundredths shy of qualifying provisionally for the NCAA championships.
On the women's side, senior Lucia Capano (Manchester, N.H./Manchester) earned All-New England honors for the sixth time in her career including indoor and outdoor competition. Capano finished sixth overall in the triple jump with a distance of 10.85 meters (35 feet, 7 1/4 inches). It was her third triple jump accolade to go along with three in the long jump.
The Judges' best finish was turned in by junior Lily Parenteau (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), who tied with two other competitors for second place in the high jump. Her height of 1.58 meters (5 feet, 2 1/4 inches) was just shy of her season best, but good enough for her first-ever All-Region honor.
Brandeis had two All-New England performers in the mile run. Senior Grayce Selig (Narberth, Pa./Springside School) was the top seed in the event, but ended up finishing third overall with a time of 4:57.18. She still owns one of the fastest times in the nation this season. This was the fourth All-New England honor of her career, to go with regional championships from 2010 in the 3,000-meters indoors and the 1,500 outdoors. She also was part of an All-New England distance medley relay as a rookie. Classmate Marie Lemay (Saco, Maine/Thornton Acad.) added her third consecutive All-Region honor in the mile with a time of 5:09.23, good for fifth place, matching her best finish at the New England Division III Championships.
