Ward sets personal record in 1500m to lead Judges in outdoor opener at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Junior Grady Ward (Essex Junction, Vt. / Essex) led a strong Brandeis showing in the 1500m with a personal record time of 4:05.00 at the Wesleyan Invitational Saturday. This marked the beginning of the outdoor part of the Judges' schedule, but competition was held indoors due to poor weather conditions.

Ward and four other Judges finished in the top 12 in the 1500-meter run. Ward ran a p.r. of 1500 to finish second with rookie Roger Lacroix (Waltham, Mass. / Waltham) right behind him at 4:10.86. Fellow rookie Russell Santos (Marshfield, Mass. / Marshfield) finished ninth at 4:22.22, while sophomore (Hopedale, Mass. / Hopedale) Matt Doran and rookie Ben Fong (Beijing, China / Intl. School of Beijing) crossed 11th and 12th respectively under three seconds behind Santos.

Rookie Aaron Karlin (Beverly Hills, Calif. / Beverly Hills) ran the 800-meter in 2:07.68, good for eighth place. Junior Trevor Tuplin (Weymouth, Mass. / Weymouth) and sophomore Joshua Romanowicz (Peru, N.Y. / Peru Central) finished in the top-17.

Junior Eddie Tai (Watertown, Mass. / Watertown) ran 24.75 for a personal record in the 200-meter race. This put him in 14th place. Tai also ran the 100-meter dash in 12.56 seconds. His time was 0.16 seconds slower than that of rookie Adam Beckwith (Arlington, Mass. / Concord Carlisle), who finished 16th.  

In the 4x400m relay, a team of junior Matt Becker (Mendon, Mass. / Nipmuc Regional), Santos, Karlin, and LaCroix ran a time of 3:44.75. This put them sixth overall.

The Judges return to action this weekend at the Tufts Snowflake Classic on Saturday.
