Ogundiran, Stender, Berger named UAA Track Athletes of the Week, Jan. 11

WALTHAM, Mass. – After a fine showing at their semester opener over the weekend, three members of the Brandeis University track and field team have been selected as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week. For the women, rookie Doyin Ogundiran of Dix Hills, N.Y.,was honored for track. On the men's side, sophomore Ryan Stender of Amherst, Mass., was honored for track and senior Adam Berger of Concord, N.H., was the field athlete of the week.

      Brandeis competed at the non-scoring University of Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 9.

      Ogundiran was honored by the UAA for the first time in her career. She won the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:47.60, nearly three-and-a-half seconds faster than her next competitor. It was Ogundiran's second collegiate win in as many individual races, having captured the 800 meters in December at the UMass Boston Invitational, when she beat an opponent from Division I Holy Cross.

      Stender was recognized by the UAA for the third time in his career and first in track and field after twice earning accolades during the cross country season. Stender won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:01.02, ranked 33rd in Division III and second in the UAA for the season. He won the race by a margin of 3.5 seconds.

      Berger was honored for the first time in his career by the UAA after producing two top-three performances. He was second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.71 meters and third in the long jump with a distance of 6.17 meters. Berger moved into the top three by improving from sixth place after the preliminaries.

      Brandeis continues its season with their only home meet of the campaign, the Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational on Saturday. Field events start at 10 a.m., track events at 11 a.m.

      Ogundiran is a 2015 graduate of Half Hollow Hills East High School.

      Stender is a 2014 graduate of Amherst Regional High School.

      Berger is a 2012 graduate of Concord High School.
