Scott, Whitaker shine in outdoor opener

 Waltham, Mass.- In their outdoor opener, the Brandeis track and field team had several personal records at the BSU Bears Invitational at Bridgewater State. Seniors Evan Scott (North Kingstown, R.I. / North Kingstown) and Kelsey Whitaker (Kingston, Mass. / Notre Dame Acad.)  were also the winners of their respective competitions, the high jump and the 1500-meter run.

Scott won the high jump with a leap of 6'4.75" (1.95m). Rookie Scott Grote (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) led the Judges in the shot put with 32'4' (9.86m), and in the discus throw with 114'2" (34.80m).    

Rookie Regan Charie (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet Reg.) had the highest finish for the Judges in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints. He finished eighth in the 100 in a career-best 11.61 seconds, and 12th in the 200 in 23.62 seconds. Senior Trevor Tuplin (Weymouth, Mass. / Weymouth)  paced the Judges in the 800-meter race in 2:12.19, just 0.19 seconds off his career-best.

In the men's 1500-meter race, sophomore Max Whitmore (Wayne, N.J. / Newark Academy) led four Brandeis participants, coming in 21st with a time of 4:26.77. Sophomore Russell Santos (Marshfield, Mass. / Marshfield) was just behind him in 22nd in 4:27.56.

Brandeis had three women finish in the top five in the 1500-meter race. Whitaker and sophomore Kyra Shreeve (Northborough, Mass. / Algonquin Reg.) were first and second with times of  4:52.12 and 4:58.48, respectively. Rookie Julia Bryson (Quincy, Mass. / North Quincy) placed 5th in 5:07.84.

Senior Tove Freeman (Oakham, Mass. / Quabbin Regional) placed third the 800-meter in a collegiate-best 2:28.54, shaving nearly three seconds off her previous best. Rookie Kanya Brown (Amherst, Mass. / Amherst Regional) finished her first collegiate 100-meter race in 11th place in 13.38 seconds. Brown also came in 10th place in the 200-meter race with a time of 28.03 seconds.
