Men finish tied for third at Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – At the 14th annual Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational, the Brandeis University track and field teams each finished in third place at the first of two home meets for the Judges this season.

The Brandeis women scored 67.5 points to finish behind Southern Maine (175.5) and Division II Merrimack (73). The men posted 70 points to tie with Merrimack just one behind cross-town rival Bentley (71), with USM also claiming the title on the men's side with 158 points.

 

TOP PERFORMERS – MEN

  • Senior Irie Gourde (Portland, Ore./York School, Canada), in just his second-ever meet for the Judges, had three second-place finishes. In the 200-meter dash, he ran 23.13 seconds, while in the 400 he posted a time of 51.46 seconds, just eight-hundredths behind the winner from USM and ranked 33rd in Division III this season.

  • Gourde also led off a 4x400-meter relay with senior Jeremy Wilson (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth) and rookies Erez Needleman (Bronx, N.Y. / High School of American Studies at Lehman College) and Jacob Judd (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) that finished second to Southern Maine with a time of 3:38.92.
  • Also turning in a runner-up finish was junior Mitchell Hutton (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park), who turned in a time of 8:47.46 in the 3,000-meter run, currently ranking him 15thin Division III this season.
  • Rookie Aaron Corin (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) placed second in the pole vault with a height of 3.80 meters (12 feet, 5 ½ inches), besting his previous career-high by just a shade less than a foot.
  • The Judges had two runners finish in third place behind Gourde in his two sprints. In the 200, sophomore Regan Charie (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet Reg.) posted a time of 23.75 seconds, while in the 400 it was rookie Churchill Perry (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / Westminster Academy) who was third in 52.14.
  • Charie scored in the 55-meter dash, where he was sixth in 6.87 seconds, while rookie Lorenzo Maddux was fourth in 6.76.
  • Juniors Brian Sheppard (Whitman, Mass. / Whitman-Hanson Reg.) and Roger LaCroix (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the mile run with times of 4:33.44 and 4:36.68.

TOP PERFORMERS - WOMEN

  • The Brandeis women started the meet strong in the 3,000-meter run. Two-time cross country All-American Emily Bryson (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) won the event in her first race of the indoor track season with a time of 10:14.16, which is the fifth-fastest time in Division III this season. Senior Maddie Dolins (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) finished second with a time of 10:28.95, ranking her seventh in Division III, and Emily's twin sister Julia Bryson (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) was third in the race in 10:36.81 to rate 21st in D3.

  • Sophomore Doyin Ogundiran (Dix Hills, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) was victorious in the 800-meter run with a mark of 2:24.97, winning by about 2.5 seconds. Her time is currently 19th in Division III.
  • Ogundiran also led off the second-place 4x400-meter relay team, with rookies Arial Nieberding (Palatine, Ill. / William Fremd), Lydia Harris (Damariscotta, Maine / Lincoln Academy) and Kayla Fahey (Kingston, Mass. / Silver Lake Regional) combining for a time of 4:16.66, just 0.13 seconds behind Merrimack.
  • Rookie Willa Moen (Ashland, Ore. / Ashland), in just her first meet for the Judges, won the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 11 inches (1.50 meters).
  • Brandeis had one other event with three scorers, the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Maya Sands-Bliss (Williamsburg, Mass. / Amherst Regional) was fourth in 1:03.49; Harris was fifth in 1:04.62; and Fahey was sixth in 1:04.71.
  • Junior Jordin Carter (Fort Wayne, Ind. / R. Nelson Snyder) finished among the scorers in both throwing events, placing fourth in the 20-pound weight throw (11.84m, 38-10 ¼) and fifth in the shot put (10.52m, 34-6 ¾). Her weight throw distance was a personal best, while her shot was just one centimeter off her top career indoor performance.
