BOSTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field teams concluded the regular season portion of their schedule on Friday and Saturday at the Boston University David Hemery Valentines Invitational. The meet included one of the Judges' oldest records in the books falling.
In the men's 200-meter dash, senior Irie Gourde (Portland, Ore./York School, Canada) posted a time of 21.98 seconds, besting the school record of 22.02 seconds set by Robert Moore '79 38 years ago. Gourde's time was the fastest in the University Athletic Association this season and ranks 18th in Division III. He won his heat and placed 15th among all runners in a field of 225 made up of Division I, II and III competitors. Gourde also placed 22nd in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.68, which ranks him 15th in Division III and tops in the conference.
On the women's side, junior Emily Bryson (Quincy, Mass./No. Quincy) turned in the fourth-best time in Division III this season in the 3,000-meter run. She now tops the UAA with a time of 9:43.15, which was good for 22nd overall and second among D3 runners. Her time was within three seconds of the school record. Bryson is also ranked third in Division III in the mile run, in which she set the school record earlier this season.
Senior Maddie Dolins (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) also recorded a national-caliber time in the 3000-meters at BU, finishing 56th overall with a mark of 10:04.24, which is ranked 28th in Division III and fifth in the conference.
Other top performances for the Judges included strong showings by the milers, especially from sophomore Christine Minor (Alameda, Calif./Alameda) who ran a 5 second PR of 5:32.75 and from rookie Daniel Curley (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) who ran a 9 second PR of 4:30.09. The fact that all eight of the Brandeis women competing in either the 200-meter run or 400-meter run saw PRs is also not to be overlooked.
The Judges will make their next appearance at the Division III New England Championship Meets this weekend, sending a women's squad to MIT and a men's squad to Tufts University. Next weekend, the Judges will take on conference rivals at home in the University Athletic Association Championship Meet.
