O'Neil wins three times for men at outdoor season opener

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Brandeis University track and field teams opened their outdoor season today with a windy day at the Wellesley Invitational. The Judges picked up seven wins on the women's side and eight on the men's side.

Sophomore Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) was the standout for the women's team, earning three wins on the day. Campbell took the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.56 seconds, the 200m in 27.87 seconds and the 100-meter hurdles in 15.97 seconds. Her time in the 100 was a personal best.

In the 1,500-meter run, the Judges had the top three finishers, with sophomore Lizzy Reynolds (Winchester, Mass. / Winchester) winning the event in 5:02.67, junior Bridget Pickard (Westwood, Mass. / Westwood) placing second in 5:07.63 and senior Erika Karlin (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) taking third in 5:22.34.

Sophomore Olivia Zarzycki (Belmont, Mass. / Belmont) was a double-winner, capturing the 400-meter hurdles with a p.r. time of 1:07.08 and the high jump with a height of 1.45 meters (4 feet, 9 inches). Sophomore Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx H.S. of Science) took the long jump with a distance of 5.18 meters (17 feet even).

On the men's side, senior Jamie O'Neil (Auburndale, Mass./Newton North) was the lone multiple individual winner. He took the 200-meter dash in 24.21 seconds and the 400m in 53.50 seconds. First-year Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) joined him as a sprint winner, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.71 seconds., a p.r.

In the middle-distance and distance events, senior Matthew Driben (Reading, Pa./Wyomissing) captured the 1,500m run with a time of 4:09.49, while first-year Lucas Dia (Montclair, N.J. / Montclair) was victorious in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:13.71, besting senior teammate Jac Guerra (Guilford, Conn./Guilford), who ran 10:23.71, all personal-best performances.

In field events, sophomore Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) won the triple jump with a distance of 11.42 meters (37 feet, 5 ¾ inches), while junior Jonathan Hau (Taipei, Taiwan / Taipei American School) won the hammer with a heave of 36.79 meters (120 feet, 8 inches). Hau was also second in the discus with a throw of 34.32 meters (112 feet, 7 inches). Both were personal-bests.

Brandeis also won the 4x400-meter relay with the team of O'Neil, sophomore Henry Nguyen (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Vocational Tech), Slotky and first-year Simon Goode (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) running a time of 3:38.33.

The Brandeis men also sent three runners to the Tufts Snowflake Classic to run in a more competitive 800-meter run. Senior Jacob Grant (Rockville Center, N.Y. / South Side) placed fourth with a time of 1:58.25, while classmate Aaron Portman (Wheeling, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) was 11th in 2:00.33.

Brandeis is next in action on April 8 and 9 at the Ocean State Invitational at Providence and the Amherst Spring Fling.
