Men finish third at Tufts as four milers score

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's track and field team tied for third in their second meet of 2023, the Branwen Smith-King Invitational at Tufts. The Judges had 90 point, tied with Coast Guard, and 30 points behind UMass Dartmouth in second.

First-year TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport) had two winning performances for the Judges. He took the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:31.91, with junior Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter) taking second in 2:38.65. The two then combined with junior Parker Jones (Westbury, N.Y. / Packer Collegiate Institute) and first-year Leo Schiappa (Wareham, Mass. / Old Rochester Regional) to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:34.95.  

Senior Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio / Northwest) was a terrific all-around performer, scoring in three different events. He placed third in the long jump (6.44m, 21-1 ½) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.73 seconds) and sixth in the high jump (1.80m, 5-10 ¾)

Brandeis middle-distance runners were outstanding, with six scoring performances, including four in the mile. Junior Willem Goff (Pelham, Mass. / Amherst Regional) was the runner-up; sophomore Spencer Lee (Great Neck, N.Y. / William A. Shine Great Neck South) was fifth in 4:45.50; junior Henry Nguyen (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester Vocational Tech) was seventh in 4:48.45; and first=year Dylan Zhao (Staten Island, N.Y. / Brooklyn Tech) was eighth, winning his heat in 4:59.83

Other middle-distance scorers included junior Young Wang (Hopkinton, Mass. / Hopkinton) taking fourth in the 600-meters in 1:32.77, and senior Taylor Diamond (Roslyn Heights, N.Y. / Roslyn)  also taking fourth in the 800 in 2:12.92

Sophomore printer Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) was fourth in the 60m in 7.29 seconds after running 7.34 in the prelims.

In field events, Jones took sixth in the long jump (6.24m, 21-0 ¾). The Judges had two scorers in the triple jump, with junior Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) taking third (11.71m, 38-5) and sophomore Lin Lin Hutchinson (Portland, Ore. / Ida B. Wells) taking sixth (11.16m, 36-7 ½).

Senior Jonathan Hau (Taipei, Taiwan / Taipei American School) placed eighth in the 35-pound weight throw (12.36m, 40-6 ¾).

In his first collegiate heptathlon, first-year TJ Showstead (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) finishe in sixth place overall with 3337. He was 2nd in hurdles and third in the 1000-meters.

Brandeis returns to action next weekend at the Riverhawk Invitational at the Track at New Balance.
