Showstead's decathlon performance paces men at Smith

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University track and field teams competed in two meets this weekend. On Friday, they traveled to Providence College for the Friar Invitational, a non-scoring event. On Saturday, they traveled to Smith College in Northampton, MA for the Carla Coffey Invitational. The men and women both finished seventh in this event.

 

TOP PERFORMANCES IN PROVIDENCE (FRIAR INVITATIONAL)

  • There were three personal records set in the mile run, two on the men's side and one on the women's side:

    • First-year TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport High School) followed last week's nationally recognized 800-meter run with another record, this time in the mile. He finished 32nd with a time of 4:14.46.

    • Junior Willem Goff (Pelham, Mass. / Amherst Regional) also set a personal record with an impressive time of 4:25.52, finishing 49th.

    • Sophomore Kayla DiBenedetto (Andover, Mass. / Andover) set her own record with a phenomenal performance, finishing 23rd with a time of 5:10.21

TOP MEN'S PERFORMANCES (CARLA COFFEY INVITATIONAL)

  • First-year TJ Showstead (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) had a career day, finishing 8th in the decathlon with a score of 4981, and setting four personal records. In the 400-meter run, he finished seventh with a time of 54.91. In the discus throw, he finished 6th with a distance of 29.95m. In the pole vault, he finished 8th with a height of 3.10m. In the 1500-meter run, he finished 9th with a time of 5:18.05. All of these were career bests. He nearly had two more career bests as well. In the high jump, he finished 8th with a height of 1.64 meters, a single centimeter off his personal record. In the shot put, he finished 6th with a distance of 10.78 meters, just 3 centimeters off his record.

  • In his second ever event, first-year Adam Rieden (Littleton, Mass. / Littleton) finished second place in the javelin throw with a personal record distance of 49.50 meters. This eclipses last week's debut by 9.70 meters.

  • First-year Caleb Sharif (Newton, Mass. / Boston College High School) had his best collegiate performance setting two personal records. In the shot put, Sharif finished 18th with a distance of 11.04 meters. In the discus throw, he placed 17th with a distance of 31.63 meters.

TOP WOMEN'S PERFORMANCES (CARLA COFFEY INVITATIONAL)

  • The Judges performed very well in the 400-meter run. Junior Liz Korn (Piedmont, Calif. / Piedmont) placed 5th with an impressive time of 59.39. This was 0.26 seconds away from her personal record. Sophomore Hannah Bohbot-Dridi (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos High School) did set a career time of 59.96, placing ninth. Prior to this race, the judges had finished in under one minute just once this season (Korn). Junior Olivia Zarzycki (Belmont, Mass. / Belmont) also raced well, finishing 17th with a time of 1:02.68. This was 1.23 seconds off her record.

  • The 4x100 relay team of senior Devin Hiltunen (Quincy, MA / North Quincy), first-year Shaniece Nugent (Hartford, Conn. / Lawrence Academy), junior Smiley Huynh (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx H.S. of Science), and sophomore Alya Campbell (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) finished 6th with a time of 49.58.
