Steve Flanagan joined the Brandeis track & field and cross country staff as an assistant coach in August 2015.

Flanagan coaches the Judges’ mid-distance runners, long sprinters, and throwers. In 2017, Flanagan helped coach Irie Gourde '17 to his first NCAA Championship appearance in the 400m and a 38-year-old school record in the 200m. During his time with the mid-distance runners, he helped guide Doyin Ogundiran '19 to an NCAA Championship appearance in the 800m. In 2017, both Gourde and Ogundiran earned All-University Athletic Association honors in their respective events. In 2018, the duo was even better. Gourde earned three All-America honors - two in the 200 and one in the 400 - and was named the University Athletic Association Most Outstanding Performer both indoors and outdoors and was named the New England Region Runner of the Year in both seasons. Ogundiran qualified for the NCAA championships in the 800m in both seasons, sacrificing individual glory indoors - when she was ranked among the top 10 nationally - to help the distance-medley relay to a third-place finish. Flanagan also helped Jordin Carter '18 establish a new school record in the 20-pound weight throw and runner-up performance in the event at UAAs.

Flanagan joined the Brandeis staff after spending two years at Providence College. While at Providence, he worked as both a compliance office graduate assistant and graduate assistant coach with the track & field and cross country teams. During his time there, both the men and women’s cross country teams finished in 13th place at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He coordinated workouts for the sprint, middle distance, and multi-event student-athletes, including Phil Reid who garnered 2nd-place finishes in the Big East Conference heptathlon and decathlon. Additionally, he helped Emily Sisson to two NCAA titles and a collegiate record of 15:12.22 in the 5,000-meter run at the 2015 Big East Indoor Championships. He received his Masters in Business Administration from Providence in 2015.

In 2012, Flanagan earned his Bachelor of Sciences degree in mathematics from Fairfield University. He was selected as a team captain as a sophomore and was a three-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic selection. As a senior, Flanagan helped Fairfield to its best-ever finish at the IC4A Championships.
