ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Streilein
(Point Pleasant, N.J.) tossed a complete-game two-hitter while
going 1-4 with an RBI today as the Brandeis University softball
team defeated Case Western Reserve University, 7-1, in a University
Athletic Association (UAA) contest at the Seminole County Softball
Complex in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Brandeis (3-5, 2-4 UAA) picked up its second conference win by
scoring seven runs on eight hits. Senior SS Mari Levine (Hopkinton,
Mass.) gave the Judges all the runs they need with a two-run single
in the bottom of the first inning. Case (4-6, 0-6 UAA) took
advantage of a lead-off double to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of
the second inning.
Brandeis put the game away in the bottom of the third with five
runs. With the bases loaded, rookie 3B Samantha Worth (Londonderry,
N.H.) drove home a run with a ground ball second base. She was
followed by sophomore DH Dani Meyer (Sodus Point, Calif.), who
clubbed her first home run of the season, a three-run shot.
Streilein picked up her RBI four batters later, plating senior LF
Elissa Glucksman (Stamford, Conn.). From there, Streilein retired
18 of the last 19 Spartan batters.
Brandeis was led by Mayer, who finished the game 3-3 with three RBI
and the home run. Smith was the only other multiple hitter, going
2-4 with two runs scored, while Levine was 1-3 with two RBI. In the
circle, Streilein struck out three and walked just one in her
seven-inning stint.
