WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomore hurler
Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) singled home the winning run in
the eighth inning to secure her ninth win of the season and give
the Judges a second-straight extra-inning victory, 6-5, over the
Regis College Pride on Marcus Field today.
Brandeis (19-23) jumped on the Pride early, as senior 1B Bri Smith
(Tewksbury, Mass.) singled home classmate Elissa Glucksman
(Stamford, Conn.) in the first inning. The Judges added three more
in the second as junior RF Marissa Rubin (Teaneck, N.J.) doubled
with one away after junior C Christina McWilliams (Billerica,
Mass.) reached on an error to put runners on second and third.
Glucksman drove in the inning's first run, while a passed ball
allowed Volpe to plate Rubin and a third run scored on a Regis
error.
Regis (9-26) stormed back in the fourth inning with four runs of
their own. The first four batters reached safely, with senior DP
Amanda Reyes (Maplewood, N.J.) opening the scoring. After senior C
Blair Benander (Rutland, Mass.) cut the lead to 4-2 with an infield
groundout, Brandeis's only error of the game allowed two more
runners to score and tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior SS Mari Levine (Hopkinton,
Mass.) plated Volpe on a ground out as the Judges reclaimed the
lead. Regis answered in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by
senior LF Colleen Hill (Malden, Mass.) with one away that knotted
the score at 5-5. Volpe got the next two outs to escape with no
more damage. Regis stranded Brandeis runners on the corners in the
bottom of the seventh to force the extra innings.
In the seventh, Regis bunted the courtesy runner from second to
third, but a come-backer to the circle and a strike out meant the
Judges needed just one run, which Volpe delivered with a line shot
to left field one away.
For the game, Volpe finished 1-5 with two RBI at the plate. In the
circle, she tossed her 17th complete game of the season, striking
out seven and walking just one. Volpe gave up six hits and five
runs (three earned) to improve to 9-12 on the season. Other
offensive standouts for the Judges were Glucksman, who was 2-3 with
an RBI and two runs, and sophomore 2B Dani Mayer (Larkspur,
Calif.), who was 2-4 with a double.
Regis had no multiple hitters, but Reyes was 1-4 with a run scored
and an RBI, while Hill was 1-3 with a double and an RBI. Senior
Veronica Coles (Wareham, Mass.) suffered the loss in relief.
