WALTHAM, Mass. – Trinity College junior 1B Sara Dougherty
(Long Valley, N.J.) went 4-4 with two home runs, including a grand
slam, and six RBI today as the Bantams defeated the host Brandeis
University Judges, 13-2, on Marcus Field.
Brandeis (9-12) led the contest, 2-1, after one inning of play.
After the Bantams scored in the top of the first, Brandeis
sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) singled
home senior 3B Elissa Glucksman (Stamford, Conn.) to tie the game.
After a line-drive double play got Trinity two outs, the Judges
strung together three more hits, with sophomore DP Dani Mayer
(Larkspur, Calif.) giving the hosts the lead on a single to center
field. Brandeis left the bases loaded, however, and would not get
another runner past second base as the visitors turned two more
double plays on the afternoon.
Trinity (11-2) junior SS Stacey Hills (Menlo Park, Calif.) tied the
game in the second with an RBI double. The Bantams took the lead
for good with a five-run third. The first five Trinity hitters
reached base, with the big blow in the inning a bases-loaded double
by rookie 3B Ariana Mullin (Woodbridge, Conn.) that drove in all
three runs. The visitors put the game away on Dougherty's solo
round tripper to right-center field to lead off the fourth and her
grand slam to center in the five-run fifth inning.
In addition to Dougherty's big day at the plate, Mullin went 2-3
with four RBI and a double, while Hills was 3-4 with a pair of
two-baggers and two runs scored. Senior Victoria Moshier (Old
Saybrook, Conn.) picked up the win in the circle to improve to 4-1
on the campaign. She allowed six hits and two unearned runs,
striking out two and walking one.
For the Judges, Streilein had the only multi-hit day, going 2-2
with an RBI and run scored. She also suffered the loss in the
circle, going 4.2 innings to fall to 7-4 on the season.
Brandeis is next in action tomorrow when they play host to Husson
College in a doubleheader at 11 a.m., while Trinity hosts in-state
rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
