Worcester, MA (taken from a WSC press release) - The Worcester
State College softball team split a pair of games with the visiting
Judges of Brandeis University Thursday afternoon at Rockwood Field
in Worcester. Brandeis took the first game in convincing fashion
running away from the Lancers by the final score of 11-1. Worcester
State took the second game by the final of 6-3. Worcester State
finishes the day at 4-6 with their MASCAC opener approaching this
weekend against Bridgewater State, while Brandeis is now 8-10.
In game one, the Judges scored four runs in the first and third
innings and added three more in the fourth to close out the Lancers
in 5 innings. Seniors Mari Levine (Hopkinton, MA) and Brianne Smith
(Tewksbury, MA) led the way for the Judges offensively as Levine
went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Smith was 2 for 3 with a
pair of runs batted in. Danielle Mayer (Larkspur, CA) and Elissa
Glucksman (Stamford, CT) each added 2 RBI. Kaitlin Streilein (Point
Pleasant, NJ) got the win for Brandeis tossing a 2-hitter and
striking out 5. Senior Sarah Green (Hopkinton, MA) took the loss
for the Lancers.
In game two, Worcester State got to work early scoring two runs in
the first inning and adding a single run in the bottom of the
third. Brandeis got on the board in the top of the fourth scoring a
run to make the score 3-1 but senior Jess Lisi (Southbridge, MA)
gave the Lancers all the runs that they would need as she hammered
a three run home run over the left centerfield fence to give
Worcester State a 6-1 advantage. Freshman Veronica Clark
(Worcester, MA) and junior Sara Chamberlain (Hudson, MA) each had
two hits in the game. Freshman Jessalyn Hyland (Swansea, MA) earned
her first collegiate win going the distance.
