ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis University softball team
scored all five of its runs in the second inning and pitchers
Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) and Allie Mussen (Franklin
Square, N.Y.) tossed a combined four-hitter as the Judges defeated
Case Western Reserve University, 5-1, in University Athletic
Association (UAA) action today.
Brandeis (2-2, 2-2 UAA) got all the scoring they would need in the
second when junior 1B Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.)
singled and sophomore 2B Danielle Mayer (Larkspur, Calif.) followed
with her second home run of the tournament. Case junior Amanda Bell
looked to get out of the inning without further damage when she got
the next two outs, but the Spartans committed a pair of errors that
put runners at first and second. Rookie SS Chelsea Korp (Worcester,
Mass.) made Case pay with a two-run single to left field that gave
Brandeis a 4-0 lead that increased to 5-0 on an RBI single by
junior RF Victoria Roomet (Jamaica, N.Y.). The Judges only got one
base runner after that, but Volpe and Mussen were able to dance
their way out of trouble.
Case (3-3, 1-3 UAA) loaded the bases with just one hit in the
fourth inning, a single by junior catcher Jen Bullen. The Spartans
got on the board on a two-out run-producing walk by senior 2B
Courtney Geib, but Volpe avoided further trouble with a groundout
to third base. The Spartans got base runners in each of Mussen's
three innings of work, but double plays when Case runners tried to
take extra bases got the Judges out of trouble in the fifth and
seventh, while Mussen got a strike out and a grounder with two on
and one out in the sixth.
Korp was Brandeis's only multiple hitter, going 2-3 with a pair of
RBI, while Mayer's round-tripper was the Judges' only extra-base
hit.
